5 Things to Know about Crash Avoidance Technologies (Part 2)

Although crash avoidance technologies can be effective at warning drivers about accidents, not all of these systems are created equal.

Although crash avoidance technologies can be effective at warning drivers about accidents, not all of these systems are created equal.

Picking up from 5 Things to Know about Crash Avoidance Technologies (Part 1), the following discusses three more essential pieces of information that motorists should know when it comes to these systems.

  1. Not all crash avoidance systems are created equal – There is a twofold implication with this fact. First off, this points out the fact that different types of crash systems will be more or less important when it comes to the overall safety of a vehicle. For instance, industry safety experts tend to place more importance on front crash prevention systems than other technologies like, for instance lane departure warning systems. This is because front crash prevention systems generally play a more important role when it comes to saving lives.

The second point that this fact highlights lies in the fact that the same systems in different vehicles (i.e., made by different manufacturers) have varying degrees of efficacy. In fact, according to the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS), some of the vehicles with the best front crash prevention systems (for 2014) include the Mercedes-Benz C Class, the Subaru Legacy and Outback, the Cadillac ATS and SRX, and the Volvo S60 and XC60.

The IIHS rates these systems for more than 70 vehicles, so consumers are advised to check the IIHS ratings for crash avoidance systems before buying a vehicle.

  2. Crash avoidance systems can NOT make up for bad or reckless driving – While crash avoidance technologies can be effective at warning drivers of potential collisions, the fact remains that these systems cannot force people to be more careful or diligent drivers. If motorists choose to get behind the wheel after drinking alcohol, if they choose to violate traffic laws and/or if they choose to otherwise drive recklessly, these technologies can only offer minimal protections, and there is still a substantial risk of car accidents.
  3. How effective these systems are at preventing crashes is still disputed among experts – There are not currently any hard and fast statistics regarding how effective specific crash avoidance systems are at preventing or reducing the risk of crashes. As industry professionals continue to test and tweak these systems in an effort to dial in and quantify their efficacy, motorists are cautioned to continue to do their part to drive safely and remain sober and focused behind the wheel to reduce their risk of accidents.
