Although you may be a very careful driver, you can’t always trust that other motorists on the roadways will be responsible or careful, and oftentimes, other drivers’ negligence can lead to serious car accidents – including blind spot car accidents. Blind spot car accidents occur when drivers fail to check their vehicles blind spots – i.e., the areas that drivers cannot see in their mirrors or when looking forwards – and attempt to change lanes or make a turn, crashing into a vehicle in their blind spot.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 840,000 blind spot car accidents occur each year in the U.S., and these accidents result in more than 300 fatalities. What is possibly just as tragic as the fact that these collisions can be deadly is the fact that they are always preventable, as in most cases they could have been prevented if one driver had simply turned his head and checked the blind spots on each side of his vehicle.
How to Reduce the Chances of Blind Spot Car Accidents
The following are some tips on what motorists can do to minimize their chances of causing a blind spot car accident:
- Always check and adjust your rearview and side mirrors before driving.
- When adjusting your vehicle’s rearview mirror, make sure to position it so that the back window of the car is framed. Also, be sure to keep the back window of the vehicle clean (and the back area of the vehicle clear) so that you can see out of this window when looking in your rearview mirro.
- When adjusting your vehicle’s left side mirror, make sure to position it so that only part of the driver’s side of the vehicle is visible. This will allow for the left-side lane to be visible in the mirror.
