Bill Beckwith, the general contractor who co-hosted HGTV’s popular show “Curb Appeal,” was killed last week when he was hit by a vehicle while riding his motorcycle. According to law enforcement officials and the police report, Beckwith was riding his motorcycle at around 8:30 pm in San Francisco’s Haight Ashbury district when, at the intersection of Oak and Steiner streets, a passenger vehicle hit his motorcycle. Although the driver of the passenger vehicle – a 30-year-old man – remained at the scene of the accident and is reportedly cooperating with police, the investigation into the specific causes of this accident is ongoing.

At this point, police have not yet ruled out the following possibilities as potential causes of this fatal motorcycle accident:

  • The driver of the passenger vehicle was intoxicated, which could be verified (or ruled out) as a cause upon analyzing a blood sample for possible concentrations of drugs and/or alcohol.
  • The driver of the passenger vehicle ran a red light or stop sign or violated the traffic laws in some other way, which may be proven by witness statements and/or footage from nearby surveillance cameras.
  • The driver of the passenger vehicle was fatigued and/or distracted. While this may be a little harder to prove, driver distraction may be verified by checking the motorist’s cellphone records to see if he may have been using his phone immediately prior to the accident.

Should any of the above factors be found to have played a role in the causing this fatal motorcycle accident, Beckwith’s family will likely have a wrongful death claim and may be able to sue the driver of the passenger vehicle for compensation for their tragic loss.

Alternately, if some piece of equipment on the motorcycle or passenger vehicle is found to have been defective, then Beckwith’s family may be able to sue the manufacturer for a wrongful death settlement.
