Software problems that increase the risk of vehicle fires have caused vehicle manufacturer GM to issue a massive recall of its 2014 Chevy Silverado trucks, as well as the company’s 2014 GMC Sierra full-size trucks. According to the recent recall announcement, approximately 370,000 trucks will be affected by this recall, and the company will be alerting vehicle owners of the recall by mail over the coming weeks (if owners have not yet received notice of the recall). The specific nature of the vehicle equipment problems associated with the recalled trucks is software problems that are reportedly increasing the risk that the trucks’ exhaust systems will overheat and, consequently, burst into fire.
According to GM, the company has received at least 8 reports of vehicle fires associated with this software problem to date; however, none of the reported truck fires has yet resulted in injuries to drivers or vehicle occupants, nor to surrounding property (as these fires have all been reported to have occurred in colder areas affected by recent snowstorms).
What Vehicle Owners Should Do in Response to this GM Truck Recall…
While vehicle owners are instructed to take their Sierras or Silverado trucks to local auto repair shops to get the software glitch fixed as soon as they are able to, until then, GM has instructed vehicle owners to not leave their trucks idling for any extended period of time due to the risk of vehicle fires.
Avoiding this idling time may be problematic for Sierra and Silverado truck owners who live in the Midwest, the East or in other areas of the country still plagued by cold winter temperatures, as it’s a common practice to leave vehicles idling when they are first started as a way to warm up the engine.
