How to Deal with Insurance Companies after a Car Accident (Part 2)

When dealing with insurance companies after a car accident, be sure to report the details of the accident and save all receipts for expenses you incur from the accident.

When dealing with insurance companies after a car accident, be sure to report the details of the accident and save all receipts for expenses you incur from the accident.

Picking up from How to Deal with Insurance Companies after a Car Accident (Part 1), here are some additional tips regarding what policyholders should do when dealing with insurance companies when making a car accident claim.

  • Record as many details associated with the car accident as possible and report them to the insurance company. While it can be helpful to write down your version of the events leading up to the accident (as well as what happened during and after the accident), it is also important to take as many pictures as possible of the property damage incurred (to your vehicle and possibly to other vehicles) and of any injuries sustained.
  • Record all interactions and conversations you have with your insurance company. Note the dates, times and topics of these conversations, as well as the name of the agent(s) you spoke with, for your records.
  • Save receipts and bills for all expenses you incur as a result of the car accident. In order to get fully reimbursed under your car insurance policy, you will need to have this documentation and submit it to your insurance carrier. In order to keep track of all of these receipts and bills, it’s a good idea to get a special folder, binder or envelope where you can file each of these receipts.
  • Make sure to file a car insurance claim with ALL insurance companies with which you may have policy. For example, while you may have your own car insurance that covers you in any car you drive, you may also be covered under another policy – like your partner’s policy – in the event you are driving his or her car at the time of the accident.
