The top cause of death for individuals between about 5 and 35 years old is traffic accidents, and the leading cause of car accidents in the U.S., according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), is driver error. While driver intoxication and driver exhaustion can contribute to driver error-related car accidents and injuries, driver distraction supersedes these causes, as it is the number one cause of car accidents caused by driver error. Given that driver distraction is preventable, both lawmakers and researchers are working to try to curb factor, reduce the number of car accident deaths that occur each year in the U.S. and ultimately help improve the safety of roads and highways throughout the U.S.
To this end, researchers of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety recently published the results of a study they conducted on distracted driving. As part of this study, researchers focused on potential driving distractions, including:
- Listening to the radio
- Talking on cell phones – both hand-held and hands-free devices
- Using voice-activated technologies, such as those that allow drivers to control features of their vehicles, operate their phones, write emails, etc.
Among these potential distractions, the study found that voice-activated technologies were the most distracting elements to drivers, as they significantly:
- Increased drivers’ mental workloads
- Created a phenomenon that researchers deemed as “inattention blindness,” which cause drivers to miss essential visual driving cues, such as traffic signs and signals.
