Reducing Car and Pedestrian Accidents is Focus of New Denver Campaign

Denver officials have rolled out a new campaign, the Heads Up campaign, aimed at decreasing the number of car and pedestrian accidents that take place in the city.

Denver officials have rolled out a new campaign, the Heads Up campaign, aimed at decreasing the number of car and pedestrian accidents that take place in the city.

Last week, the City of Denver rolled out a new campaign that is aimed at decreasing the number of car and pedestrian accidents that take place in the city. Dubbed the “Heads Up” campaign, this new effort is a combination of a safety awareness and a marketing campaign will be publicized on billboards throughout the city and that is being paid for by the campaign’s sponsors. It is being led by Denver’s mayor, the Denver Police Department and other local leaders in the hopes that increasing the public’s awareness of their surroundings will lead to a decline in the number of car accidents involving pedestrians.

Part of the drive behind enacting this Heads Up campaign has been the increased number of car and pedestrian accidents reported from January through April 2012. In fact, during this period, there were 35 percent more car and pedestrian accidents in Denver than there had been in 2012. Similarly, the number of hit-and-run accidents – many of which involved pedestrian victims suffering serious, if not fatal, injuries – had increased in the first quarter of 2013 by more than 55 percent over those that reportedly occurred in Denver over each of the past four years.

In addition to this Heads Up campaign, Denver officials are also looking at other possible efforts that can be taken to try to reduce car and pedestrian accidents. While some of these options include enforcement-related ideas, which would be focused on increasing the penalties for certain traffic violations (including hit-and runs), others are focused on engineering controls that would try to alter the designs of crosswalks, install more traffic signals and develop other physical changes to Denver roadways in an effort to protect pedestrians traversing them.
