On Saturday May 18 and Sunday May 19, Toyota will be sponsoring the Driving Expectations Distracted Driving Course at the Stapleton Bass Pro Shop. The event, which is part of a national campaign that Toyota is sponsoring, is free and is aimed at teaching teen drivers about the dangers of driving under distracted conditions. As part of Driving Expectations, teen drivers and their parents will get the chance to drive under the supervision of professional drivers on a closed course that is peppered with pylons, sharp corners and other obstacles.
Representatives for Toyota have pointed out that having such a course and an opportunity is important:
- Just before summer, as more teens will be driving on the road
- Because standard drivers’ education courses, which teach the fundamentals of driving, rarely teach teen drivers how to respond to various distractions, particularly when quick decisions need to be made (All too often, such new drivers do not know what to do until it is too late and a serious car accident has already occurred).
Although spaces for this event are limited, sponsors say that up to 600 drivers will get the chance to test the course, and teens can register early by going clicking here.
Many safety advocates and law enforcement officials have lauded Toyota’s program, as being an effective educational campaign that can impart essential defensive driving schools to inexperienced drivers.
