Traffic Accident Deaths Increase More than 5 Percent in 2012, According to NHTSA

The NHTSA’s preliminary findings for motor vehicle accident statistics in 2012 suggest that traffic accident deaths increased by about 5.3 percent in 2012.

The NHTSA’s preliminary findings for motor vehicle accident statistics in 2012 suggest that traffic accident deaths increased by about 5.3 percent in 2012.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has recently released preliminary findings for motor vehicle accident statistics in 2012, and these findings suggest that traffic accident deaths occurring on U.S. roadways in 2012 increased by approximately 5.3 percent over those in 2011.

While this jump in traffic accident fatalities is, in and of itself, a fairly shocking statistics, what’s possibly even more jaw-dropping are the facts that:

  • This increase marks the first spike in traffic accident deaths that has occurred since 2005.
  • Motor vehicle accident deaths were up each quarter of 2012 over those that occurred in 2011.
  • Motorcycle accident deaths increased by the most in 2012 (as compared to 2011), with a reported 5,000 motorcyclists being killed in traffic accidents last year. This represents a nearly 15 percent increase in motorcyclist deaths, which is the largest percentage increase within one year. Officials at the NHTSA state that the most critical strategy to reducing motorcycle accident fatalities is to have every state enact helmet laws (currently, 31 states lack these laws for mandatory helmet use when riding).

While these 2012 traffic accident death statistics may be shocking to the public, officials at the NHTSA state that they did, in fact, expect the number of reported fatalities on U.S. roadways to increase in 2012 due, in part, to a slowly improving economy putting more unemployed individuals to work and, therefore, more people commuting on the roads.
